What is a T2125? (plain English)
Updated July 4, 2026 · Stacko team
A plain-English explainer of the CRA’s T2125 form for Canadian sole proprietors, freelancers, and side hustlers.
The T2125 — Statement of Business or Professional Activities — is the form where self-employed Canadians report business income and expenses as part of their personal tax return. You don’t need a corporation for it; a side hustle counts. Good expense records organized by category are most of the work.
Who files a T2125
If you earn self-employment income as an individual — freelancing, contracting, a side business alongside a T4 job — that income is reported on a T2125 filed with your personal (T1) return. Incorporated businesses file corporate returns instead; the T2125 is specifically for unincorporated, personal business activity.
What goes on it
- Your business income for the year.
- Your business expenses, grouped into the CRA’s expense lines — advertising, meals and entertainment, office expenses, supplies, vehicle expenses, and so on.
- Home-office and vehicle calculations where they apply.
- The result: net business income, which flows into your personal return.
Why records matter more than the form
The form itself is arithmetic; the work is the records behind it. The CRA expects you to keep receipts supporting the expenses you claim, and unclear or missing records are what turn reviews painful.
That’s the part Stacko handles: every business receipt captured, read, categorized toward the T2125’s expense lines, and stored with the original attached — so the expense side of the form is a clean export, not a reconstruction.
Where to be careful
- Business-use-of-home and vehicle claims have specific CRA rules and proportions — worth professional advice the first time.
- Meals and entertainment are generally only partially deductible.
- Whether an expense is deductible at all depends on your facts — an accountant or the CRA’s own T2125 guide is the authority, not software.
